Dave Prater (1937–1988) was an influential American soul singer, best known as one half of the legendary duo Sam & Dave. Born in Ocilla, Georgia, Prater's powerful and emotive vocal style greatly contributed to the duo's success in the 1960s. They are renowned for their energetic performances and a string of hits, including “Soul Man,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” and “I Thank You,” which became staples of the soul genre. Sam & Dave's music, characterized by its blend of southern soul, rhythm and blues, and gospel influences, played a significant role in shaping the sound of the era. Their partnership, marked by dynamic harmonies and call-and-response vocal techniques, not only helped define the Atlantic Records label but also inspired countless artists across genres, including rock and hip-hop. Prater's impact extended beyond his collaborations; his work laid the groundwork for the soul music movement, influencing future generations of musicians. Despite their split in the early 1970s, Sam & Dave's legacy endures, with their songs continuing to resonate in popular culture and music today. Prater was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, solidifying his place in music history.
